Development and construction of a 50 kWe CHP system operating with natural gas

Patras,  07/08/2015

HELBIO S.A., in collaboration with ALSTOM POWER LTD, ALSTOM (SCHWEIZ) AG, DAIMLER AG, UNIVERSITY OF SPLIT, UNIVERSITA DEGLI STUDI DELLA TUSCIA, and STIFTELSEN SINTEF were  awarded a grant under the H2020-JTI-FCH-2014-1 call for proposal, to develop, build & validate a 50 kWe PEM CHP system running on natural gas.

“The overall aim of the project is to create the foundations for commercializing an automotive - derivative fuel cell system in the 50 to 100 kW range, for combined heat and power (CHP) applications in commercial and industrial buildings. More specifically, the project has the following objectives:

  • develop system components allowing reduced costs, increased durability and efficiency
  • build and validate a  50 kW PEM prototype CHP system
  • create the required value chain from automotive manufacturers to stationary energy end-users

Mass-market production of fuel cells will be a strong factor in reducing  costs. In this respect, joining  forces of two non-competing sectors (automotive and stationary) will bring benefits to both, to increase production volume and ultimately reduce costs to make fuel cells competitive.”

The starting date of the project is August 1st 2015 and the duration is 3 years.

HELBIO will design and build the fuel processor, based on proprietary technologies, and will integrate it with a PSA so as to produce pure hydrogen. The power system will be based on the Daimler fuel cell stack similar to the one used in automobiles.
